The assignment: cover a day of auditions for an artist-development program, held in a brick-and-timber lounge operated by a concert promoter. The room went from empty chairs to full tables. Performers went up one at a time, a guitar or a mic and nothing else. The working problem was light, bright windows and warm bulbs on one side, a black stage on the other.

One at a time, a mic and nothing else.
