Luminato Festival

A covered waterfront mainstage, open at the sides to the weather, flat overcast light all afternoon, then a hard coloured wash after dark. Effectively two shows in one room. The band was built around a drum kit, with keys, bass, guitar, horns, steelpans, backing vocalists and a children's choir rotating through. The problem was light: nothing to shape a face in daylight, single-source stage light that clips fast after sunset. So the photographer worked angle instead, low, from inside the kit, from the players' shoulders.
